winner. At least in my mind. If we look at available software again there is no question about the winner. Windows is way ahead of OSX.

So naturally it always takes a bit more time to find the right piece of software and this was of course no different when I went looking for layout design software. Now everyone knows WinTrack but it is not really an option to boot into windows on the mac just to sketch and draw some track layout. So I set out to find what was available that would run natively in OSX.

A couple of googles later and I had a list of about 3 or 4 programs that seemed to do the trick. Unfortunately 2 of them only worked on OS mexicanonlinepharmacy-norx 9 or hadn’t been updated in 5 years. The remaining 2 was XTrackCAD and RailModeller.

XTrackCAD was the first one I found and tried. It

free of charge. Now maybe I’m spoiled by OS X in general but I didn’t find it easy to approach. First of all, and this is probably due to XTrackCAD being cross platform, there was no OS X feel to it. XTrackCAD looks very much like a Windows application. So what, you might think. But one of the key differences between OS X and Windows is that OS X applications have a tendency to help the user much more than windows apps. How many times have you seen a windows application with 1 million icons in the toolbar, tiering you just a little bit even before you started using the

X apps don’t have some of the more special features that only a few people use. So there is a balance. Secondly take a look at the image of XTrackCAD below. If it wasn’t for the fact that I know I’m running OS X 10.6, this looks like something dating back before Windows 3.11. Feature wise this of course doesn’t matter but I just hate looking a 16 color graphics. Thirdly XTrackCAD didn’t have a track library for any Bemo tracks which was a bit annoying as I could see that WinTrack did include one. Fair enough. XTrackCAD is open source and I could create my own if I felt like it. But I didn’t, so I kept looking.

XTrackCAD

And found RailModeller. Very much by coincidence. It actually took my quite some time. RailModeller is native OS X, does include cialis for fun Bemo tracks, can do 3D rendering, allows for flex tracks and is very easy to use. And all for €35 which is about 1/3 of the price of WinTrack. What it doesn’t have is complex 3D terrain modeling like WinTrack but I can live without that for now. As long as I know that it is in the pipeline for future releases.

Railmodeller 2D

Ok, it does in fact have a lot of icons on the toolbar but it is still not dull like XTrackCAD. :-)

Here is a 3D rendering of a small layout.

RailModeller 3D

So if you’re looking for layout design software for OS X I can very much recommend RailModeller.

Stay tuned for more posts on working with model trains and running on Mac’s.
